This piece is the latter part of Chapter 8 (3) of The Declaration of the Age of Physical Economics (Yoon Jong-won, Yoon So-ri, Yoon Jun). It is an academic exposition presenting the authors' physical economics hypothesis, and the body, figures, and citations follow the manuscript as written.
The Economic-Domain Application of the Five Stages
| Stage | Name | Economic Formulation | Core Event |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Factor | Cumulative funnel theory, DIAH trigger activation factors | 5 to 10 years of accumulation of policy, habit, and external shocks and the buildup of activation factors |
| 2 | Onset | DIAH trigger, outflow theory | The trigger breaks through its threshold, and the mobilization of emergency savings, foreign exchange, and fiscal resources begins along with the deposition of interest |
| 3 | Blockade | Dual blockade theory (B* = CAM · DLT) | The CAM functional-signal blockade and the DLT physical-channel blockade operate simultaneously |
| 4 | Manifestation | 7M theory | The surfacing of the seven forms of damage |
| 5 | Annihilation | System shutdown, the point of external intervention | IMF, TARP, quantitative easing, or a change of the monetary unit |
The Verification of 690 Months of Korea and the United States
The fact that the five stages are not a metaphor but something actually verified was confirmed in a macro time-series (data in which each month's economic indicators are linked in chronological order) spanning 351 months of Korea (from January 1997 through March 2026) and 339 months of the United States (from January 1998 through March 2026), 690 months in total. The data sources are the Bank of Korea Economic Statistics System, the Federal Reserve Economic Data of the United States, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, and satellite nighttime luminosity data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration were used together as supplementary verification. All of the data is public data accessible to anyone. Not a single item of confidential data was used.
The analytical tool is a 9-axis, 59-gauge diagnostic system. A nation's economy is divided into 9 large axes, and these 9 axes correspond exactly one-to-one to the 9 organ systems of the human body. The A1 circulatory system is currency and the flow of funds, the A2 respiratory system is trade and imports and exports, the A3 digestive system is consumption and domestic demand, the A4 nervous system is sentiment and policy, the A5 immune system is financial stability, the A6 endocrine system is prices and public finance, the A7 musculoskeletal system is industry and production, the A8 demographic and vulnerable axis is employment and households, and the A9 regeneration and external axis is energy and the external sector. Just as one examines all 9 organ systems when diagnosing the human body, one examines all 9 axes of a nation's economy as well. And by placing multiple detailed gauges on each axis, the state of every gauge is measured each month. From these measured values, the CAM functional-signal blockade index and the DLT physical-channel blockade index are computed, and the product of the two indices (B* = CAM × DLT) becomes the blockade intensity. If the blockade intensity exceeds its threshold for 6 consecutive months, it is judged a dual blockade, and if only one side exceeds it, it is judged a single blockade. Because the system enters the road of no return only when the two blockades are engaged together, when only one side is engaged the other side can compensate, so addition fails to capture the decisive difference between the two events. That is why the multiplication formula was adopted.
As a result of the verification of the 690 months, the cases judged to be dual blockades are the four Korea-U.S. cases of the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2020 coronavirus shock. The 1997 Korean foreign-exchange crisis and the 2003 Korean credit-card crisis are, by the engine's measured verdict, cases in which a single-blockade advance warning of CAM (signal blockade) alone led into crisis (a measurement under the observational limit of the 25 gauges then in operation; the reading that the two axes formed simultaneously remains a hypothesis of historical reconstruction). In all four crises the five stages operated in sequence, and just before annihilation the system shutdown was narrowly averted by external intervention. On December 3, 1997, Korea agreed with the IMF on a 58 billion dollar bailout; on October 3, 2008, the U.S. Congress passed a 700 billion dollar Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP); and from March 2020 the U.S. Federal Reserve entered unlimited quantitative easing. Had there been no such external intervention, it is highly likely that all 4 cases would have proceeded along the harshest path of all, namely system shutdown, that is, a change of the monetary unit or a replacement of the form of government.
Conversely, the cases judged to be single blockades that recovered on their own numbered 3. They are the 2001 U.S. dot-com bubble collapse, the 2011 U.S. credit-rating downgrade, and the 2022 U.S. rapid interest-rate hikes. In 2001, the CAM blockade index on the asset-price axis exceeded its threshold, but the DLT of the household funding channel remained normal. In 2011, there was a temporary shock on the government-debt axis, but the household and corporate channels were hardly affected. In 2022, asset prices were shaken by the interest-rate-hike shock, but the DLT blockade index of the household funding channel stayed below its threshold. The interesting fact is that in all 3 of these cases the system recovered on its own without any separate external intervention.
This concordance clearly shows the fact that the five stages are not simple pattern recognition but a structural law. In the four Korea-U.S. cases of 2008 and 2020, where the two blockades were engaged together and dual blockade formed, the system collapsed in earnest in every one, and in the 3 cases where only one side was engaged and the system recovered on its own, the system held out in every one. 1997 and 2003 are cases that proceeded into crisis under a single-blockade advance warning of CAM alone, a measurement under the observational limit of the time (25 gauges). Not once over the 690 months have the two blockades been engaged together without proceeding into crisis.
The advance-detection results were confirmed together as well. In the 1997 Korean foreign-exchange crisis, the crossover signal of the blockade indices reached its threshold in May 1997, and the actual request for the IMF bailout was made on November 21 of the same year. This means an advance detection of about 6 months. In the 2008 U.S. global financial crisis too, the blockade index reached its threshold in March 2008, and the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers occurred on September 15. Again this is an advance detection of about 6 months. By contrast, in the 2020 coronavirus shock the blockade index and the shock event reached their points in the same month. This is a case that shows the result that an exogenous shock, that is, a crisis that suddenly strikes from outside, is hard to detect in advance.

The Three Essential Properties of the Five Stages
For the five stages to be recognized not merely as similar in shape but as a genuine universal law, they must possess 3 essential properties. They are order invariance, irreversible acceleration, and domain independence. The names may look difficult, but if we unpack them one by one they are not hard. A law that possesses all three of these is very rare even within nature. Let us look at each one.
The 1st property is order invariance. The order that runs from factor to onset, from onset to blockade, from blockade to manifestation, and from manifestation to annihilation is never reversed. In the 690-month time-series, there is not a single case in which the blockade was established first while the onset had not been triggered, nor a case in which manifestation appeared first without a blockade, nor a case in which annihilation arrived first without manifestation. In Korea in 1997, in the United States in 2008, and in the coronavirus of 2020, the five stages proceeded in the same order. The same result is reported in the medical domain as well. There has never been a case in which the microcalcification dual blockade was established while the DIAH trigger had not been activated, nor a case in which clinical damage surfaced without a dual blockade. This order invariance becomes a powerful tool in diagnosis. This is because it means that when a single instance of damage at the manifestation stage is observed, the fact that all of the preceding stages have already progressed automatically follows.
The 2nd property is irreversible acceleration. Irreversible means that once something happens it cannot be undone. The moment the five stages cross the threshold, they proceed in only one direction, and moreover with ever-increasing speed. Before the threshold, the system holds both possibilities, so if the pressure is withdrawn it can return to its original position, but the moment it crosses the threshold the system accelerates in only one direction. The physical basis of this acceleration lies in the law of fluid flow that the French physician Jean Poiseuille formulated in 1846. It is the law that the flow rate through a tube is proportional to the fourth power of the tube's radius. This may not be intuitively obvious, but it becomes clear when seen in numbers. If a tube narrows by half, the flow drops to one sixteenth. Even if the tube shrinks to only 90 percent, the flow falls to about 65 percent. The same thing happens in everyday life. If you press the end of a hose just slightly, the stream of water suddenly becomes stronger, and if you narrow a drinking straw just slightly, it suddenly takes great force to draw the drink up. The very reason a crisis, after proceeding slowly for a long while, appears to suddenly strike at some moment lies in this fourth power. This means that Poiseuille's Law, which operates in the microvasculature of the human body, produces the same nonlinear amplification in the funding pathways of a nation as well.
The 3rd property is domain independence. This means that the same five stages operate with the same structure in the human body, in the economy, in a star, and in a river. The five stages identified in Korea in 1997 were repeated in the same shape in the United States in 2008, and the five stages found in the microvasculature of the human body operated with the same precision in the funding pathways of a nation. The reason this concordance is possible is that even though the names of the medium and the channel differ from domain to domain, the structure itself is preserved. This means that because the structure is the same, the same shape is produced even in different domains.
A law that possesses all three of these is uncommon even among the laws of nature. Clausius's second law of thermodynamics operates across domains but does not pin down the order of the five stages. Scheffer's critical-transition theory pins down the location of the threshold but does not pin down the entire pathway up to that threshold. DTDMC specifies the order, formulates the irreversibility of the acceleration, and operates in the same form across domains. Only a law that fulfills all three qualifications finally has the qualification of a universal law.
The Three Essential Properties of the Five Stages
| Property | Definition | Verification Basis | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order invariance | The order of the five stages is not reversed | 0 reversals over 690 months | The appearance of one stage simultaneously points to the preceding stage |
| Irreversible acceleration | One-directional acceleration after crossing the threshold | Poiseuille r⁴ law | It cannot be stopped by blocking further deposition alone |
| Domain independence | Operates in the same form across domains | Verified in the two domains of the human body and the economy | Fulfills the qualification of a universal law |
The Justification of the Academic Name of Physical Economics
Let us gather in one place the facts derived in this chapter. There is a fixed order to the process of collapse. That order is the five stages of factor, onset, blockade, manifestation, and annihilation. These five stages are a large framework that operates regardless of what flows and which domain it is, and they operate in the same shape in the human body, in a star, in a river, in an ecosystem, and in the climate. The fact that a nation's economy also operates upon the same law was confirmed with an accuracy that has never once given a false alarm nor once missed, in the monthly data of 690 months of Korea and the United States. These 4 facts gather toward a single conclusion. It is that a nation's economy is not a product that people fashioned moment by moment, but a single system that moves upon the laws of nature's flow.
This conclusion is the foundation of the academic name physical economics. In fact, a similar intuition has existed since long ago. In 1758 the French physician and economist François Quesnay explained the circulation of funds in his book Tableau Économique by likening it to the blood circulation of the human body, and in 1936 the British economist John Maynard Keynes formulated in his book The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money that the flow of effective demand creates crises. The two men clearly pinned down the essence of flow. However, they did not formulate the pathway by which that flow stops into five stages. Verifying it with data spanning 690 months was also impossible in the era of the two men. This is the first time that the fact that the stopping of flow follows a five-stage pathway, the fact that this pathway operates with the same precision in the 30 years of data of Korea and the United States, and the fact that the same pathway is preserved in the human body, in a star, and in a river have been gathered in one place.
Therefore, physical economics is not a declaration to create a new academic field. It is the work of honestly acknowledging the fact that a nation's economy already lies upon a law of nature upon which it is moving, and calling that law by its name. The result of adding, to the domain that Quesnay and Keynes pointed to by metaphor, the five-stage pathway law and the verification results of 690 months is the work that this book calls physical economics. The weight of a new academic name comes not from putting forward a new claim but from a verified pathway.
