The Truth Proven by a 4000-Year-Old Mummy

Against the claim that "calcium supplements are the cause of calcification," history presents decisive evidence.

The HORUS study, published in The Lancet in 2013, revealed a shocking fact. The research team CT-scanned 137 mummies excavated from Egypt, Peru, the American Southwest, and the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

These mummies span a full 4000 years, from 2000 BC to AD 1900 (Thompson et al., 2013). The results were astonishing. In 47 of the 137 mummies (34%), atherosclerotic calcification was found. Calcium had been deposited in the aorta, coronary arteries, carotid arteries, iliac arteries, femoral arteries, and other sites identical to those of modern people.

The global HORUS study, published in the European Heart Journal in 2024, expanded this even further. As a result of analyzing 237 mummies from around the world, atherosclerotic calcification was confirmed in 37.6%. The research team concluded that "this finding supports the existence of an inherent human predisposition to atherosclerosis" (Alam et al., 2024).

The oldest case is a princess of Egypt's 17th Dynasty who lived from 1580 to 1550 BC. Calcification was found in her coronary arteries. This is the oldest recorded case of coronary artery disease in human history.

Even more notable are the hunter-gatherers of the Aleutian Islands. They were people of a pre-agricultural society, living on fish and seafood and wild berries. There were no modern processed foods, no sugar, no saturated fat. And yet in 3 of the 5 of their mummies (60%), atherosclerotic calcification was found. In the mummy of a 50-year-old woman, severe calcification was confirmed in two of the three coronary arteries.

Here we must ask a decisive question. When were calcium supplements invented? Calcium supplements began to be distributed commercially only after the mid-20th century. There is no way that the Egyptian princess of 1580 BC, the Peruvian native of 200 BC, or the 19th-century Aleutian hunter-gatherer could have taken calcium supplements.

And yet their blood vessels were full of calcification.

This proves historically how absurd the formula "calcium supplements = cause of calcification" is. Calcification is a phenomenon that has accompanied human history. From 4000 years before calcium supplements even existed, calcification was piling up in human blood vessels.

The Truth Proven by Growing Children

Against the claim that "calcium supplements are the cause of calcification," the bodies of children present yet another counter-argument. Think about it. Who consumes the most calcium?

It is growing children. Children drink milk every day, eat calcium-fortified cereal, and parents even feed them calcium supplements for the sake of height growth. There are many children who consume 1.5 to 2 times the recommended amount for adults.

If that is so, shouldn't children's blood vessels be full of calcification?

But the reality is the exact opposite.

In children, vascular calcification is essentially not found. The subjects for whom the coronary artery calcium score (CAC Score) is measured are adults aged 40 and over. In pediatric cardiology, cases of diagnosing "this child's blood vessels have hardened because they ate too much calcium" do not exist, except for extremely rare genetic diseases.

Why is that? Because in the growth period, calcium goes to the bones.

A review paper in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition explains it this way. "A healthy adult whose growth has stopped needs a calcium intake of 550 to 1200mg per day to maintain calcium balance. In contrast, growing children and adolescents need a state in which calcium is being accumulated for bone formation, and most of the calcium they consume is used for skeletal growth" (Weaver, J Am Coll Nutr, 2020).

In a child's body, calcium goes to the bones. Because the bones are growing. There is no reason for it to go to the blood vessels.

In contrast, in the bodies of adults and the elderly, the situation is reversed. Calcium that has leaked out of the bones wanders through the bloodstream and deposits in damaged tissue. People commonly point to calcium supplements or high-calcium foods as the culprit, but the real cause lies elsewhere. It is the calcium that leaked out of the bones in response to the emergency signals of inflammation, acidosis, and hypoxia, and this is precisely what acts as the poison called calcification.

GroupCalcium intakeDirection of calciumVascular calcification
Growing childVery highMoves to bone (skeletal growth)None
Healthy adultAppropriateDistributed to bone and cellsLittle
Osteoporotic elderlyInsufficientLeaks from bone into blood vesselsSevere

If calcium intake were the cause of calcification, then the most severe calcification should appear in children, who consume the most calcium. But the reality is the exact opposite. The most severe calcification appears in osteoporotic elderly, who consume the least calcium (or from whose bones calcium is leaking out).

This is the "Calcium Paradox."

Component Analysis: Calcium Eaten by Mouth vs. Calcium That Comes Out of Bone

Here we reveal a decisive fact. What is the true identity of the calcification that piles up in the blood vessels?

When vascular calcification tissue is analyzed, its component is hydroxyapatite (Byon et al., PMC, 2012). Its chemical formula is Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂. This is a complex in which calcium (Ca) and phosphate (PO₄) are combined.

But there is a surprising fact. This hydroxyapatite is exactly identical to the main component of bone. 70% of the human bone is composed of precisely this hydroxyapatite.

CategoryComponentChemical formula
Main component of boneHydroxyapatiteCa₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂
Vascular calcificationHydroxyapatiteCa₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂
Calcium supplementCalcium carbonate / calcium citrate, etc.CaCO₃ / Ca₃(C₆H₅O₇)₂

Do you see the difference?

Calcium supplements taken by mouth are in the form of calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, and the like. When these are digested and absorbed in the body, they break down into pure calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and enter the bloodstream.

These calcium ions go to the bones and are used to raise bone density, or are put to use in cellular signal transmission.

In contrast, the calcium that leaks out of bone is different. When bone breaks down, calcium and phosphorus come out together. It is released into the bloodstream in the hydroxyapatite form as it is, or as calcium and phosphate together. When this deposits on damaged vessel walls, sites of inflammation, and acidified tissue, it becomes vascular calcification.

The true raw material of calcification is not the calcium eaten by mouth. It is the calcium-phosphorus complex that leaked out of the bones.

The Calcium Paradox: The Truth Science Has Revealed

This phenomenon has a name. It is the "Calcium Paradox."

A review paper titled "The Bone-Vascular Axis," published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine in 2019, explains it this way.

"The calcium paradox refers to the paradoxical phenomenon in which postmenopausal women experience a decrease in bone density while at the same time vascular calcification increases. This phenomenon is commonly observed in osteoporosis patients and chronic kidney disease patients" (Wasilewski et al., 2019).

"Vascular Calcification and Bone Disease: The Calcification Paradox," published in Trends in Molecular Medicine in 2009, reveals it more clearly.

"Ectopic calcification of blood vessels is frequently accompanied by a decrease in bone density or an abnormality in bone turnover rate" (Persy & D'Haese, 2009).

A study published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation in 2014 presents decisive evidence. "The patients who showed the most severe aortic calcification had the lowest bone density." The weaker the bones become, the harder the blood vessels grow. This is the calcium paradox.

Demonized Calcium, and the Truth Behind It

So then, what about the studies claiming that "calcium supplements raise cardiovascular risk"?

A Korean study published in Nutrients in 2022 analyzed National Health Insurance data and reported that "calcium supplement prescription is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease" (Park et al., 2022). This study drew attention for having used Korean data, and it was extensively cited by major media including broadcast TV news, as well as by doctors, pharmacists, and medical professionals, as grounds for the claim that "calcium supplements are dangerous."

But when you look closely into this study, an entirely different interpretation is possible. Who are the subjects aged 45 and over who are prescribed calcium supplements through National Health Insurance? Realistically, most of them are people already diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Calcium supplements are not prescribed to healthy people. A prescription comes out only when there is a diagnosis that the bones have weakened.

So then, what is the reason that cardiovascular disease occurred more in these people?

It is not that calcium supplements created a new risk. Rather, it is the result of calcium leaking out of the bones over decades through the process of calcium deficiency and chronic stress, inflammation, and acidosis, and that leaked calcium piling up as calcification in the blood vessels and throughout the body's tissues.

The fact that someone has reached the point of being diagnosed with osteoporosis means that calcium has already been leaking out of the bones for decades. Where would that calcium have gone? It piled up in the blood vessels.

Osteoporosis and vascular calcification are two sides of the same process. The reason cardiovascular disease is common in osteoporosis patients is not because of calcium supplements, but because they are two outcomes stemming from the same cause (abnormal calcium metabolism) to begin with.

Furthermore, this study is an observational cohort study that used National Health Insurance claims data to trace only the association between merely "whether calcium was prescribed" and cardiovascular events. It clearly has the limitation that its level of evidence and reliability are lower than those of a meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which verify causality more rigorously.

In contrast, the latest highly reliable meta-analyses reach a different conclusion. A meta-analysis published in Heart, Lung and Circulation in 2023 reported that "as a result of analyzing 12 randomized controlled trials, calcium supplements had no significant association with myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, or mortality" (Tan et al., 2023).

A large-scale meta-analysis published the same year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also concluded that "calcium supplements were not associated with a significant risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, or all-cause mortality."

In the Framingham study as well, "a tendency for the coronary artery calcification score to actually decrease as calcium intake increased" was observed (Sahni et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2012).

The research findings conflict. And yet why was only the message that "calcium is dangerous" spread?

Media and YouTube channels sell fear. News and videos saying "calcium kills you" draw more clicks than news saying "calcium is safe."

And complex explanations such as the limitations of observational studies, the characteristics of the subjects, the difference between causation and correlation, and study reliability are omitted.

Try searching for "calcium" on YouTube right now. Sadly, videos with millions of views pour out, and in the public's mind the formula "calcium = calcification = danger" has already taken hold.

In particular, in the case of medical professionals, despite having a responsibility to deliver accurate information through the analysis of papers, they are still amplifying and reproducing incomplete research findings in order to lure sensational clicks. This is a serious problem directly connected to human life. If, because of wrong information, people who absolutely must take calcium are right now dying of calcium deficiency, this must be corrected without fail.

What Is Happening Inside Your Bones at This Very Moment

This is not a story of some faraway land. It is what is happening inside your body right now.

Did you get stressed on your way to work this morning? Cortisol was secreted and pulled calcium out of your bones. Did you fail to get even 6 hours of sleep last night? Lack of sleep suppresses bone formation and promotes breakdown.

Did you eat instant noodles or a hamburger for lunch? The excessive phosphorus in processed food pulls calcium out of the bones. Did you drink three or more cups of coffee? Caffeine increases the urinary excretion of calcium.

Is there chronic inflammation somewhere in your body? Do your gums swell, do your joints throb, or do skin troubles recur? Chronic inflammation activates osteoclasts to promote bone breakdown, and at the same time induces calcium deposition at the site of inflammation.

Are you taking digestive aids, antacids, or blood pressure medication? Many drugs hinder calcium absorption or promote its excretion. Are you taking prescribed steroids? Steroids are a representative osteoporosis-inducing drug that suppresses bone formation and promotes breakdown.

Have you received or are you receiving cancer treatment? Many anticancer drugs affect bone metabolism and reduce bone density. Are you taking hormone medication? The decrease in estrogen is a major cause of the rapid bone loss in postmenopausal women, and some hormone therapies have a negative effect on bone health. Have you spent the whole day indoors without seeing sunlight? Vitamin D deficiency sharply lowers the rate of calcium absorption.

In all of these situations, your body has the same response.

It pulls calcium out of the bones.

The moment the blood calcium concentration drops even slightly, parathyroid hormone is immediately secreted and dissolves the bone. Because for the heart to beat, the muscles to move, and the nerves to transmit signals, calcium is needed. This is an unavoidable choice for survival.

Chronic inflammation uses calcium signaling to summon immune cells, and so it activates osteoclasts. Acidification of body fluids directly dissolves the alkaline calcium from the bones to neutralize it. When cells fall into a hypoxic state, the calcium channels break down and blood calcium flows excessively into the cells, and to maintain the lowered blood concentration, calcium is again leaked out of the bones.

The problem is that this process is repeated every day in modern people because of stress, bad lifestyle habits, and wrong eating habits.

The calcium that has leaked out of the bones wanders through the blood and then deposits on damaged vessel walls. It piles up where there is inflammation. It sticks to acidified tissue. A little each day, the way specks of dust gather into a mountain, your blood vessels harden.

At this very moment as well, calcium is leaking out of your bones and steadily piling up in your blood vessels.

This is the true identity of aging. One does not suddenly grow old one day. It is the process of the bones weakening and the blood vessels hardening a little each day, accumulating over decades.

Being diagnosed with osteoporosis in your 50s and diagnosed with angina in your 60s is not a coincidence. It is a different expression of the same process.

What determines healthy lifespan is not the result of a cancer screening. How much calcium has leaked from bone into blood vessels determines how healthily and how long you can live.

The beginning of slow aging is right here, from the moment the direction of calcium reverses.

The culprit is not the calcium eaten by mouth. It is the calcium that leaked out of the bones and flowed into the blood vessels.

And what promotes that leakage is precisely calcium deficiency, chronic stress, lack of sleep, processed food, chronic inflammation, and various drugs.

Demonizing calcium and making people avoid taking it is, paradoxically, promoting calcification and raising mortality. This is the tragedy that the demonization of calcium has created.

Is the Inside of Your Body Safe?

Isn't sand-grain-like calcification quietly and secretly piling up inside your blood vessels right now too?

With cancer, fear begins the moment it is discovered. You receive the test result sheet, listen to the doctor's explanation, and set up a treatment plan. It is frightening, but at least you know the enemy exists.

Calcification, by contrast, progresses for decades without any symptoms. It arrives suddenly one day. A person who was fine in the morning collapses from myocardial infarction at lunch. A healthy person becomes half-paralyzed from a stroke. Without warning, without notice, the calcification piled up over decades takes a life in an instant.

We fear cancer, so we get cancer screenings and sign up for cancer insurance. But how many people have ever measured their coronary artery calcium score (CAC Score)? How many people have ever checked their vascular age?

The direction of our fear is wrong.

The Truth This Book Dissects

Until now, no one has properly asked this question.

"Why does calcification pile up in the blood vessels?"

Modern medicine is excellent at unblocking clogged vessels. It inserts stents, builds bypasses, and dissolves clots.

But regarding "why did it become blocked," it stops at intermediate-stage explanations such as "because cholesterol piled up" or "because atherosclerosis progressed." Why does cholesterol pile up, why does atherosclerosis progress, and why does the once-soft vessel wall harden like stone? The answer to this fundamental question is not clear.

This book dissects that truth.

Where does calcification come from? The answer, surprisingly, is your bones. In the human body, 99% of calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. The remaining 1% regulates the activities of life in the blood and cells.

The concentration of this 1% must be maintained with extreme precision.

When blood calcium becomes deficient, the body pulls calcium out of the bones and sends it into the blood. Because for the heart to beat, the muscles to move, and the nerves to transmit signals, calcium is needed. This is an unavoidable choice for survival.

The problem occurs when this process is repeated. The calcium that has leaked out of the bones wanders through the blood and then deposits on damaged vessel walls, inflamed tissue, and acidified sites.

It leaks from where it should be (the bones), and piles up where it should not be (the blood vessels, joints, and organs). This is the paradox of calcification, and it is why vascular calcification is actually more severe in osteoporosis patients.

So then, why does calcium become deficient? Insufficient dietary calcium intake, absorption disorders due to vitamin D deficiency, increased calcium demand due to chronic inflammation, calcium consumption in an acidified internal environment, and promotion of bone breakdown by stress hormones: all of these factors act in combination.

The lifestyle of modern people structurally induces calcium deficiency. As a result, the bones weaken and the blood vessels harden. The calcium that leaked out of the bones travels throughout the body via the blood vessels and piles up as the poison called calcification.

This book traces this process step by step. It reveals the pathway that begins with deficiency, passes through inflammation, acidosis, and hypoxia, and arrives at abnormal calcium metabolism and calcification deposition.

And it shows how this single pathway branches into countless diseases such as heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer's, arthritis, kidney stones, and cataracts.

The World's First Declaration

This book, for the first time in the world, officially raises the following fact. "Calcification is the real, actual root leading cause of death for humanity."

Neither the WHO, nor the statistical office, nor any official institution counts "calcification" as an independent cause of death. But as the analysis presented in this book shows, if you trace the common cause hidden behind the names of individual diseases, you arrive at a single root called calcification.

If you include here diabetes and Alzheimer's, in which abnormal calcium metabolism acts as a core mechanism, the gap widens even further. Considering even the studies that cancer itself is not unrelated to the disruption of calcium signaling, abnormal calcium metabolism becomes a single factor that explains the overwhelming majority of deaths among modern people.

This is not simple statistical manipulation or rhetorical exaggeration. It is looking at the same data through a different lens. And this lens reveals the essence that the existing organ-based and symptom-based classifications had been missing.

Why You Should Read This Book

If the claims of this book are correct, the repercussions will be enormous.

First, the focus of prevention must change. Vascular calcification testing becomes as important as cancer screening. The coronary artery calcium score (CAC Score) is a powerful predictor of future cardiovascular events.

But currently this test is not included in the basic items of a health checkup.

Second, the paradigm of treatment must change. The focus must shift from unblocking clogged vessels to resolving why they become blocked. The reason restenosis occurs even after stent procedures is that the root cause has not been resolved.

Third, the nutritional approach must be reevaluated. The conflicting research findings on calcium supplements, the role of vitamin D, and the balance with magnesium: all of this must be reexamined from the perspective of calcification.

This book is the beginning of that journey. It will reveal, step by step, how many chronic diseases branch out from a single root, how the seven pathological pathways unfold, and what practical implications this understanding holds.
